Unattended cooking has been cited as the cause of a fatal Scarborough apartment fire early Saturday, according to Toronto Fire Services.
Emergency crews were called to Eglinton Avenue East, east of Birchmount Road, around 5:15 a.m. after heavy smoke was seen coming from one of the units.
Crews performed CPR on a man, but he died at the scene.

Toronto Fire also said a battery inside the unit’s smoke alarm was removed.
