A team of 40 pianists joined together on Thursday to perform the world’s longest piano piece.
The composition, called Vexations, lasts for 18 hours. It’s being performed at Contemporary Calgary, in the 100 block of f Stephen Avenue S.W., by a group dubbed Esther’s Piano Relay Team.
The musical marathon began at 4:30 a.m. and runs until midnight.
Vexations was written by French composer Erik Satie. The performance is being held in honour of Satie’s 150th birthday (which would have been in May) as part of the 2016 Honens Festival.
“It’s one of these pieces that can either hypnotize – or maybe create kind of a zen-like state,” Honens Festival artistic director Stephen McHolm said.
