A North Okanagan woman says her husband is lucky to be alive after a brazen assault in the driveway of their Armstrong, B.C. home, by two men who may have been trying to siphon gas from his truck.

Gerald Sanjenko was letting his dogs out around 6 a.m. Friday when he noticed his gate was open and a gas can was left beside his truck.

According to his wife Rose, Sanjenko approached the vehicle and was struck in the head.

“This guy attacked him with a two-by-six — the butt end — right in the forehead,” Rose said. “Before he could even react, somebody else came up behind him and smashed him in the back of the head.”

Sanjenko was taken to hospital. He has since been released but still suffers from head and neck pain.

“He’s still in a lot of pain,” Rose said. “He may be off work for a little bit.”

Sanjenko’s family doesn’t understand why someone would resort to that kind of violence for a bit of stolen gas.

“To have this done that could have cost us his life, I’m still furious,” Rose said. “I’m still shaking over it.”

Because Sanjenko was hit from behind, he was not able to get a good description of the assailants. Police in the area have increased patrols and are hoping someone with information will come forward.
