Calgarians are mourning the loss of a well-known chef killed in a highway crash near Irricana, Alta.
Jonathan Sobol, 33, died in a three-vehicle collision on Highway 9 and Township Road 270 on Tuesday.
Sobol was the head chef at Starbelly restaurant in the southeast Calgary community of Seton and also a graduate of SAIT Polytechnic.
Before working at Starbelly, Sobol worked at the three Michelin Star restaurant The Fat Duck in Bray, UK. In a biography on Starbelly’s website, Sobol said his experience at The Fat Duck taught him a great deal.
“Most importantly how to work hard at what you love and have fun at the same time.”
Returning to Canada, Sobol worked at Play Food and Wine in Ottawa and the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
Eventually, Sobol returned to Calgary, working at Janice Beaton’s FARM restaurant where he promoted local, sustainable and fresh products.
Sobol was well-respected in the culinary world and made a number of appearances on Global News.

Starbelly closed early on Tuesday and will remain closed on Aug. 31.
On Wednesday, the restaurant posted a statement on Facebook expressing their condolences to Sobol’s family.
“We have experienced such a great loss but his memory will live on through the culinary art he created for so many Calgarians.”
According to the post, Sobol had been visiting a farm on the outskirts of the city when the crash occurred.
Another man was in the car with Sobol. EMS said both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends have identified the second victim as Alec Bracegirdle, 20, a creative assistant with Calgary-based ASolidSite.com.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
