Manitoba’s trade minister has announced increased funding to boost tourism in the province during a visit to a northern community facing major economic woes.
Cliff Cullen made the announcement Monday in Churchill, where U-S-based rail company Omnitrax shut down the town’s port on Hudson Bay last month and cut the number of rail trips to the community in half.
Cullen says the Manitoba government is increasing the Tourism Development Fund by more than 50 per cent to 297-thousand dollars in fiscal 2016 — with priority to be given in part to projects that encourage nature-based outdoor recreation and wildlife and nature viewing.
He also announced increased funding totaling 3.1-million dollars that will allow Travel Manitoba to expand marketing campaigns targeting Canada, the United States and overseas travelers.
