A Calgary woman charged with the murder of her 78-year-old mother has elected for a trial by judge alone.
Lisa Freihaut is charged with one count of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Irene Carter.
Police said Carter’s body was discovered in her Lethbridge home on Normandy Road South just after 2 p.m. on Jan. 17.
Her death was originally classified as suspicious, but an autopsy later revealed Carter was stabbed to death.

Carter’s death was Lethbridge’s first homicide of 2016.
An investigation determined Freihaut and Carter were involved in a dispute over finances. Police alleged the pair got into a physical altercation which resulted in the senior’s death. It’s believed she was killed on Jan. 13, four days before her body was found.
A preliminary hearing for Freihaut is set for Jan. 26 and 27, 2017.
