Woman taken to hospital after dogs attack her in north Edmonton

An investigation is underway after a woman was taken to hospital after being attacked by two dogs on 58 Street and 162 Avenue on Aug. 25, 2016. Global News

Animal Care & Control officials are trying to track down the owners of two dogs they say attacked two people in north Edmonton Thursday, including a 51-year-old woman who was taken to hospital.

The incident unfolded Thursday morning near 58 Street and 162 Avenue.

An official with animal control said police and firefighters originally responded to the call but his staff were called in to help at around 10:30 a.m.

Keith Scott said two black retrievers attacked a woman as well as a man who stepped in to try and help her. The woman was taken to hospital with arm and leg injuries.

He said the animal control officers had to chase down the dogs after the attack and they are now in the city’s custody for a period of up to 21 days while an investigation is completed.

The official said they are working to determine who owns the dogs as neither was wearing any identification and it is unclear whether they were microchipped.

According to animal control, the owners could face fines, have their dogs designated as “dangerous,” which would mean the dogs would face certain restrictions, or the dogs could be “destroyed” if they are deemed to pose too significant a risk to the public.
