“The Ministry of Environment could have taken control of this site on March 11, 2016 and put the calls out for tenders then and it would’ve been cleaned up by now,” said Quebec Green Party leader Alex Tyrell.

“Instead, we’ve had one delay after another.”

Pointe-Claire Mayor Morris Trudeau said the situation will be postponed to January 2017, when the site’s owner, Juste Investir Inc., will have to come up with a plan to decontaminate the site.

The constant delays and confusion has one resident questioning council.

“I can tell you there is a lack of confidence in this council currently,” said Raen Sayegh.

Supporters of the clean-up want the city to be more involved, but that’s something that Trudeau insisted isn’t easy.

“We cannot say ‘woah, stop it, this is not working, we’re not happy.’ We are going to follow this situation very closely,” Trudeau said.

The constant delays have Sayegh wondering if Pointe-Claire has any interest in the project.

“It sounds like the council wants to wash their hands from this,” Sayegh said.

Trudeau argued when council finds out about the plans, the city will let its residents know.

“When they inform this council, we will inform the public,” Trudeau said.
