Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced $119 million in federal funding for wastewater and public transit projects in Nova Scotia.

Speaking under sunny skies in Bridgetown, N.S., on Tuesday during a quick swing through the Atlantic provinces, Trudeau said $87 million will be used to upgrade water and wastewater systems including in Bridgetown, Lunenburg and Fall River.

A news release says the funding is retroactive to April so the projects “can proceed without delay.”

A spokesperson for Trudeau said the agreement will be similar to others made with B.C. and Quebec.

According to a government press release, the June agreement with B.C. saw Ottawa give Premier Christy Clark’s government $460 million in a cost sharing deal that required the province to commit $308 million.

Combined with funding from municipalities, the funding in B.C. totalled more than $900 million for public transit projects.

The agreements are needed in order for federal money to start flowing for local projects.

Transit was the big winner in the B.C. agreement, which saw all of the money going to new public transit routes and fleet upgrades.

Funding announced under the deal with B.C. was part of the first phase of the federal government’s $120 billion, 10 year infrastructure funding plan.

Once the deal with Nova Scotia is announced, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Nunavut, and the North West Territories will be the only jurisdictions still waiting for agreements that will allow federal money to flow.

Trudeau is expected to head New Glasgow later today for a community barbecue before travelling to Charlottetown for a meeting with P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan and other events.
