A 19-year-old man is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed while on duty as a security guard in a Jean-Coutu pharmacy on Ste-Catherine Street in downtown Montreal Saturday night.
Montreal police said the security guard followed a man in his 30s out of the store after he was seen shoplifting.
The security guard pursued the suspected shoplifter from the corner of Ste-Catherine Street and St-Mathieu Street up to De Maisonneuve Boulevard.
Jean-Pierre Brabant with Montreal police said that is when the suspect turned around and attacked the guard, stabbing him in the upper body before fleeing the scene.
Police were called to the intersection at 9: 15 p.m. Saturday.
The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to the upper body.
Brabant confirmed that his condition improved overnight and that his life is no longer in danger.
Officers are reviewing surveillance footage and hope to make an arrest in the next few days.
