A provincial police officer from eastern Ontario has been charged with sexual assault in an incident investigators say took place while he was off duty.

Police have released no details about the incident and say they will not identify the officer out of concern for the alleged victim’s privacy.

They say the accused is 48 years old and has been working for the force for 27 years.

He has been suspended from duty with pay.

The Police Services Act does not allow chiefs of police to suspend officers without pay unless they have been convicted and sentenced to a term of imprisonment.
