Global News has confirmed that Edward Downey, the man charged in connection with the deaths of Sara Baillie and her 5-year-old daughter Taliyah Leigh Marsman, has ties to Nova Scotia.

Sources say Downey lived in Nova Scotia for some time. He has a number of prior motor vehicle infractions in the province, including driving while suspended and careless driving, most of which occurred in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

There was no record of Downey being charged with any offence under the criminal code in Nova Scotia.

Downey has several aliases, including Edward Simmonds and Delton Simmonds. Global News has confirmed that police believe Downey has connections to organized crime in Nova Scotia, believed to be the gang North Preston’s Finest.

Calgary Police say they are receiving conflicting information about whether or not Downey was an acquaintance of both Sara Baillie and Colin Marsman or just Baillie.

Marsman is also originally from Nova Scotia and is also known to go by the name Colin Paris.
