A pair of Winnipeggers have been named to Canada’s track and field team for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Nicole Sifuentes will race in the women’s 1500m event while Erin Teschuk will compete in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. The two athletes secured their spot on the squad during this past weekend’s Canadian Championships and Selection Trials in Edmonton.

Sifuentes finished 19th in the women’s 1500m race at the 2012 London Olympics. The 30-year-old won silver in the same event at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Teschuk meanwhile will be competing in her first ever Olympics. The 21-year-old won the national title in the women’s 3000m steeplechase last year. She placed fourth in the event at the 2015 Pan Am Games.

A total of 65 athletes were named to Canada’s track and field team for next month’s Olympics, marking the largest squad the country has ever sent to the Games.
