Calgary Flames wrap up prospect camp; sign 1st round pick Matthew Tkachuk

After four days of on and off ice instruction, Calgary Flames prospects wrapped up development camp Thursday with a scrimmage in the morning.

Hundreds of Flames fans crammed into WinSport to catch a peek of what the team has coming up in the system.

Flames sixth round draft pick, 156th overall, Eetu Tuulola was impressive. The Finnish forward scored a hat trick for Team McDonald and added another in the shootout.

Calgary native and fellow sixth round pick Matthew Phillips also dazzled the crowd with an impressive shootout goal. Team McDonald defeated Team Nieuwendyk in the scrimmage.

Cochrane native and 2016 second round draft pick Dillon Dube scored once in the scrimmage and made good on his lone shootout attempt.

“I didn’t look and see and I try not to evaluate at this time of the year,” Flames new head coach Glen Gulutzan said. “I’m not going to get any biases towards these guys in July, that’s the reality.”

“We want to make sure they come in here and they get the information, they’re tested so their deficiencies–what they need to work on–and send them back and see if they’ve done it come September.”

After the final on-ice session, the Flames announced they signed first round, sixth overall pick Matthew Tkachuk to his first National Hockey League contract.

The 18-year-old left winger signed a three-year entry-level contract. Tkachuk, son of long-time NHLer Keith Tkachuk, is fresh off a Memorial Cup with the London Knights this past May.

The native of Scottsdale, Ariz. had 30 goals and 77 points in 57 games last season in London.
