WATCH ABOVE: It's been another big year for Canada, and on it's 149th birthday there are a lot of new faces celebrating. Global's Tracy Nagai reports – Jul 1, 2016

The beautiful weather attracted Calgarians to several Canada Day events throughout the city Friday.

At Fort Calgary, a pancake breakfast kicked off a day full of activities. Mayor Naheed Nenshi spoke to a tent full of Canadians and said they have a lot to be proud of.

“I’m feeling a little bit smug as a Canadian at the moment,” he said.

“In a world that feels so broken, in a world where we are pulling apart instead of coming together, Canada remains a place that we reject that kind of thinking.”

A citizenship ceremony was also held at Heritage Park. Dozens of people took the oath on Friday, including Marlene Linares.

“This is a really special day for me because it’s my ceremony for my Canadian citizenship. And after 10 years, I’m from Mexico, and I feel super grateful and thankful.”
