The Edmonton Humane Society has a longstanding history of helping pets and pet owners and Sunday marked an important annual event for the organization.

The annual Pets in the Park was held at Hawrelak Park Sunday, featuring dozens of activities, including a five kilometre run and two kilometre walk. The event raises money for the humane society and raises awareness about sheltered animals.

“It’s exciting for people to be able to bring down their cats, their dogs, their snakes, their pink poodles, anything that they like and intermingle and just raise awareness for animals,” Edmonton Human Society CEO Miranda Jordan-Smith said.

Last year’s event raised about $100,000 and the goal was the same for this year.

“We have Jan Arden, who’s our walk marshal, so we’re expecting to draw a different crowd this year, but, again, any dollar counts towards animals in our care,” Jordan-Smith said.
