The session was called off 52 minutes in after Renault’s Kevin Magnussen crashed into the wall, creating a considerable amount of debris on the track.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was second fastest behind Vettel, setting a quickest lap of 1:14.158. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg came in third in 1:14.316 followed by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at 1:14.332.

Defending Canadian Grand Prix champion Lewis Hamilton finished fifth in 1:14.334, slower than both of his practice sessions on Friday.

With a high risk of rain, all 22 drivers were on the track as soon as the practice session got underway. Light rain began falling midway through.

The practice session was free of any major incidents until 47 minutes in when Magnussen lost control of his car and crashed into the wall at turn seven.

The red flag came out as there was significant damage to Magnussen’s Renault. The Dane was unharmed.

The double yellow flags came out 28 minutes into the session when Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat ran off the track at turn three — possibly due to the rain. The Russian was turned around, but there was no damage to his vehicle.

The qualifying session is set for Saturday afternoon.
