A 29-year-old man is in custody and facing multiple charges after allegedly threatening RCMP officers in Kamloops on Friday morning.
According to the RCMP, the two officers were making routine patrols of the bus loop on Tranquille Road and Sydney Avenue at 10:30 a.m. when they were notified two men were drinking at the bus stop. The police officers approached the two men to advise them drinking in public was illegal and while one of the men cooperated, the other became belligerent and started yelling.
It was then the man allegedly pulled out a hatchet from his backpack and began swinging it at the officers. A video of the incident was captured by on-lookers.
One officer used a stun gun on the suspect, which had little to no effect. Mounties continued to ask the man to drop his weapon but after he continued to swing the hatchet, one officer used pepper spray on the 29-year-old. The suspect dropped the weapon and then ran into the nearby Northhills Mall, where a third officer located him and subdued him with a stun gun.
The suspect was taken into custody and is facing several charges which include obstructing a police officer, causing a disturbance, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and uttering threats..
The 29-year-old appeared in court on Friday afternoon.
