PENTICTON — A Penticton apartment building was evacuated Friday night because of a fire on the third floor.

Fire crews were called to the six-storey building at 360 Brunswick Street, just around the corner from the fire station, shortly before 9 p.m.

They quickly put out the fire, but there was significant smoke damage and some structural damage as well.

“The damage was confined to the one unit,” says Captain Graham Gowe with the Penticton fire department.

“When people evacuated, they left their doors open so they weren’t able to go back in.”

Emergency Social Services arrived to the scene and is helping residents who live on the third floor of the building and have been displaced.

“Everyone on the third floor is displaced… two people were in the unit at the time of the fire and they were able to get out as well as the whole building being evacuated,” says Gowe.

No one was injured, but a few patients were treated by B.C. Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

“It looks like it may have been accidental but that’s something the fire investigator will look into… because it’s over $5,000 in damage, we will have to do a report on it,” says Gowe.

Other residents have returned to their units.
