REGINA – Conrad Burns is taking a stroll across Canada to help end abuse.

Burns is a regular man from Prince Albert, Sask. who was once a victim of an abusive relationship and wanted to break the cycle.

He is walking across Canada to raise awareness for domestic violence and open up a conversation.

“Unfortunately, a lot of men don’t talk about abuse, so a lot of the times it’s unmanly to deal with it,” Burns said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I started coming forward thanks to a lot of good friends.”

His journey began in St. John’s on April 1. He has since walked his way to Regina, arriving in the Queen’s City on May 26.

Burns wants to raise awareness and money to help people leave their own abusive relationships.

“In my community, our safety shelter helps about 1000 people a year; unfortunately, they also turn away about 1000 people a year,” Burns said.

“In the cycle of abuse, when an individual finds enough strength to leave an abusive relationship and is turned away they will most likely go back to that abusive relationship.”

Burns has raised almost $500 so far with his campaign “Rise UP Against Abuse,” for safety shelters across Canada.

Burns will end his journey mid-August in Victoria.
