A massive food recall involving more than 400 products from Washington-based CRF Frozen Foods should give Canadians pause to carefully look through any frozen fruits and vegetables.

The affected products were shipped to all 50 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico  and have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination. The frozen food items were sold under more than 40 different brand names at major retailers like Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s and Safeway.

Among the products that were confirmed to be sold in Canada include:

  • Organic by Nature Organic Butternut Squash, 2kg package, UPC 4635800067
  • Organic by Nature Organic Sweet Peas, 2.5 kg package, UPC 4635800061
  • Organic by Nature Organic Vegetable Medley, 2.5 kg package, UPC 4635800062

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Organic by Nature Organic Sweet Peas were sold at Costco locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The agency says recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has confirmed eight people have been sickened by listeria that’s genetically similar to that found in CRF vegetables, and two have died, although listeria was not the primary cause of death.
