Alberta Animal Services is looking for witnesses after a very skinny cat was discovered in a garbage can in Red Deer.

On Monday, shortly before 5 p.m., a resident in the Glendale neighbourhood was taking out the trash when she found a backpack in her garbage can. She opened it to find another bag and inside that was a cat in need of urgent care.

Animal Services determined the cat has a broken pelvis and brain damage.

He will require surgery after he regains his strength.
