Lethbridge City Council approved development plans for the southeast area of the city Monday.
The Southeast Area Structure Plan provides a long-term vision for the future development of the area.
The plan will look to develop 680 hectares of land east of the Lakeview, Redwood, Fairmont and Southgate areas. The proposal outlines a significant amount of residential development in order to meet the increasing demand for housing in south Lethbridge.
The plan also includes developments intended to generate employment, and will also reserve open space for public and institutional land uses.
“The approval of this plan gives us a framework to guide future development,” Mayor Chris Spearman said.
“It is flexible enough to allow us to start development in certain areas while we continue with consultation and refine long-term developments.”
The new Southeast Area Structure Plan ensures alignment with provincial planning requirements and the city’s municipal development plan.
Balancing residential growth across Lethbridge, fostering business and employment opportunities, integration with existing neighbourhoods while prioritizing open space and promoting multiple transportation routes, were all significant considerations in the development of the plan, according to the city.
