Public funeral to be held for Jun Lin on Thursday

MONTREAL – A public funeral will be held on Thursday for Jun Lin, whose slaying grabbed national attention after his body was dismembered and parts were mailed to two Canadian cities.

Concordia University spokeswoman Clea Desjardins says the service will be held at a Montreal funeral home.

Lin studied computer science at the university, which is helping raise funds for his family and is setting up an award in his memory.

A public memorial was held last weekend in which his anguished mother talked about how the tragedy had devastated the family.

Lin’s dismembered torso was found May 29 stuffed in a suitcase that had been dumped in the trash outside a Montreal apartment building.

The same day, one of his feet was discovered in a package mailed to the Conservative party in Ottawa and a hand was found in another package in a Canada Post warehouse in the national capital.

His other hand and foot were discovered on June 5 in packages mailed to two Vancouver schools.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a small-time porn actor, was arrested June 4 in Berlin after an international manhunt.

He was extradited to Montreal on June 18 and charged with Lin’s first-degree murder the next day.

Magnotta has pleaded not guilty.
