RCMP are investigating the discovery of human remains found in southern Alberta on Monday.
A citizen called officers to a wooded area on the Eden Valley First Nation at around 8 a.m.
RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott said the remains were found about 53 kilometres southwest of Turner Valley, which is 75 kilometres south of Calgary.
Although an autopsy was conducted on Tuesday, RCMP said further consultation with an anthropologist was needed to determine the gender and estimated time of death.
Search and rescue crews attended the scene on Tuesday to gather additional information.
RCMP said an update would be provided when more information becomes available.
“Any time there is a situation like this, human remains found or a sudden death, we start the investigation as if it is a suspicious investigation, and then are able to work backwards from there,” Scott told Global News. “That’s why we’re very mindful of preserving the scene and collecting whatever information we can from the scene.”
