Firefighters make progress on 2 wildfires burning near Fort St. John

Firefighting crews in B.C. are starting to get the upper hand on the two biggest wildfires burning in the province, both near Fort St. John.

The Beatton Airport Road fire, 45 kilometres north of Fort St. John, is now 45 per cent contained and covers 15,000 hectares.

The largest fire — the Siphon Creek Fire — covers more than 58,000 hectares and is 30 per cent contained.

More than 300 firefighters, 16 helicopters and dozens of pieces of heavy equipment are currently involved in fighting both fires.

Crews will continue putting in control lines, mopping up and preparing to conduct a series of burn-offs as conditions allow.

Evacuation alerts in the area remain in effect.

The causes of the two fires are still under investigation.
