MONTREAL – The city will be rolling out a new car-sharing program in the next few weeks in an effort to create a vast electric-charging network across the island.
Montreal will install 1,000 charging stations in the next five years.

Fifty of the charging stations will be located downtown starting in June, with another 50 expected to be set up in the fall.
The plan is for all one-way car-sharing fleets to be fully electric by 2020, including CommunAuto and Car2Go.

Montreal mayor Denis Coderre said the model is unique to Montreal.

“We have a five-year plan, as you notice. It’s 100 now, then it’s 300, 500, 800, 1,000 but if it goes faster we’ll go faster too,” he said.
“We need to make sure we have the framework that is working.”
Montreal is the first city in Canada to implement a network of public charging stations of this scale to encourage accessibility to residents and suppliers of self-service vehicles.
