EDMONTON – It’s a unique way to showcase their art work to a new audience.

Thirty-five artists from the University of Alberta have created 35 sculptures that will be on display at the Epcor Tower in downtown Edmonton until May 17.

The unique pieces, created by students in the university’s art and design program, were unveiled Sunday on International Sculpture Day.

“I’m really pleased with the work, I think it communicates really strongly to people,” Chelsey Campbell, a second-year Bachelor of Fine Arts student, said. “Also having the opportunity to showcase in a place like Epcor Tower which is beautiful and introduces our work to a new audience that wouldn’t experience it.”

The exhibition is called Making Space and is meant to explore the effects of space and time through art.

“This is a great opportunity in a great building, trying to provoke the audience,” Roy Mills, a professor at the U of A, said.

The exhibition includes pieces made by students at different levels in their education, with a variety of backgrounds including sculpture, drawing and word and image printmaking.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for me because the students always bring stuff that I hadn’t thought of doing,” Mills added. “We’re trying to get them to draw from their own well of experience. Even if they’re young, they’re going to see the world in a different way.”
