A three-year-old girl has been hospitalized with serious injuries after eight people were thrown from a horse-drawn buggy that overturned northwest of Guelph.

Provincial police said the girl was taken to a London hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the crash occurred around 1 p.m. Sunday in Howick Township.

Five occupants were treated at the scene for minor injuries while another two were sent to hospital and released.

Police said the buggy’s driver lost control when a piece of equipment failed, causing the seating compartment to overturn.

They said the horse was injured and later euthanized.
