Cannibal alligator caught on camera chowing down on smaller gator – Apr 15, 2016

Incredible and gruesome footage of a large alligator eating a smaller gator has surfaced out of Florida.

Wildlife photographer Andrew Lilyquist captured the creature wading out of a swamp in the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Fla., this week with a fresh catch in its mouth.

Lilyquist said he estimated the gator to be over three metres long.

“My heart was racing,” he told ABC. “I just saw that big head and I said, ‘OK this is going to be great!’”

Cannibalism among alligators is typical behaviour, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the reasons could range from establishing territory to displaying dominance between males during mating season (March to June).
