CALGARY- Calgary Nose Hill Member of Parliament Michelle Rempel is hosting a job fair this weekend for out of work Calgarians. Joining Global Calgary Morning on Tuesday from Ottawa, the Conservative MP explained one of the most common issues she’s hearing from her constituents are concerns about the labour market.
“Losing your job, or being about to lose your job, is one of the most stressful experiences, so we often find people actually don’t know where to go for help.”
On Saturday, several career counselling agencies will be at the Foothills Alliance Church from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from Service Alberta, Service Canada and the Calgary Distress Centre will also be on hand. There will also be breakout sessions for people looking to update their resume, learn how to build a LinkedIn profile, and a photographer will be offering free headshots for online job profiles.
“It’s really about putting together all services in one room for somebody who perhaps hasn’t looked for a job in a while or just doesn’t know where to turn.”
Rempel said we need to make sure skilled labour stays in Alberta through the economic downturn, and is concerned the provincial and federal governments aren’t talking about retaining those workers. She said the level of investment certainty in Alberta is also alarming.
“What government can do in this situation–in both levels of government, federally and provincially–is allow for a climate of investment certainty so that investors in the patch can look at new projects,” explained Rempel. “Changes in the environmental review process and timelines, you know dangling a royalty review and then taking it away, those are not good things for investment certainty.”
Outside of talking about policy, Rempel said her reason for hosting the job fair is “to do something for the community that was real and actionable.”
