SASKATOON – Saskatoon police announced on Monday that no charges will be laid in the city’s first homicide investigation of 2016. Officials said a woman was defending herself and her children from a 29-year-old man last month.

On March 11, officers were called to an injured man at a duplex home in the 1500-block of Preston Avenue South. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The 36-year-old woman was taken into custody, interviewed and subsequently released pending the major crime unit’s investigation.

The file was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for an opinion on potential charges.

After a review of the evidence, it was determined that the man forced his way into the woman’s suite and placed the woman in a position where she was forced to defend herself and her children.

The Crown found that there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction for any death-related offences.

Police say there was no relationship between the woman and the man other than being tenants in the same building.
