EDMONTON – An Edmonton couple watched the Oilers final game at Rexall Place and the ceremony that followed on television like thousands of people — except they did in 30°C temperatures, next to a beach, on an island in the Caribbean.

Quentin and Wyonna McKay held a “Farewell to Rexall Place Party” at their restaurant named the Hangover Hut in Roatán, Honduras.

Wyonna said there was a great turnout, with Edmontonians from nearby resorts stopping by to enjoy the event.

“Here we are tonight….celebrating and reminiscing all the good times at Rexall Place over years,” Wyonna wrote in an email to Global News.

Wyonna said before she and her husband Quentin moved to the Caribbean island five years ago, she had worked at Rexall Place for six years, “enjoying every resounding moment in that building.”

“My husband and family went to the Oilers games since he was 10 years old… many great memories,” she wrote.

The Oilers will start the 2016/2017 season at Rogers Place, the new arena being built in downtown Edmonton. Earlier this year Northlands revealed its vision to radically transform Rexall from an NHL arena into seven sheets of ice on two levels.

Roatán is off the coast of Honduras and about 4,750 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
