A 20-year-old Belleville, Ont., man has been charged after a five-year-old girl was killed when a horse-drawn carriage she was riding in was rear-ended by a minivan over the weekend.
Police say nine people, including the young girl, were travelling in the carriage when it was hit by a Pontiac Montana minivan on Highway 10 in Grey County, north of Orangeville around 9:30 Sunday morning.
A 26-year-old woman who was also in the carriage suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital where she remains in critical condition.
The girl who was killed has been identified as Melinda Bowman.
Police say seven other occupants of the horse-drawn vehicle were treated at hospital and released.
The 60-year-old male driver of the minivan and the 20-year-old passenger both received minor injuries.
The passenger, identified as Alex Silk, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The accused appeared in court on Monday.
