EDMONTON – RCMP arrested a 28-year-old Tofield man Thursday, after a Boyle area tire shop was scammed of approximately $140,000.

RCMP began their investigation on March 24th. It showed at least 13 orders were placed for tires by companies which were later found to be fabricated.

The man now faces several charges including: trafficking in property obtained by crime, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

He is scheduled to appear in Boyle Provincial Court on April 12. The man’s name has not been released.

“It was also determined that the male was involved in the same scam in Tofield on March 31 and is facing similar charges out of that point,” RCMP said Sunday. “Based on information uncovered during the investigation, it is believed that this is a wide ranging scam and there is a high likelihood that other businesses in the Edmonton area and throughout the province have been affected.”

RCMP are reminding business owners to exercise due diligence when taking credit card information and to verify the validity of all credit card orders before turning over any property.

Police are also asking business owner who believe they may have been affected to contact their local RCMP detachment or police service.
