Manitoba Bisons David Onyemata, Kimberly Moors win top annual awards

WINNIPEG – Defensive lineman David Onyemata and swimmer Kimberly Moors have been named the Manitoba Bisons athletes of the year.

Onyemata takes home the award following a successful senior season in which he was selected as the country’s top university down lineman. He was also named a CIS First Team All-Canadian, a Canada West All-Star, a team MVP and played in the prestigious East-West Shrine Game. Onyemata became the first Bisons football player last month to hold a pro day for NFL scouts.

Onyemata never saw a football game, let alone play in one, until he moved to Winnipeg from Nigeria four years ago to attend the University of Manitoba.

Moors meanwhile was the top Bisons swimmer at both the Canada West and CIS swimming championships. She won a national silver medal in the women’s 50-metre butterfly earning her a CIS Second Team All-Canadian recognition. Moors also captured a conference title in the same event as well as a Canada West silver in the 50-metre freestyle.

Bisons men’s basketball head coach Kirby Schepp was named the university’s coach of the year. Hockey players Brett Stovin and Sydney Booker were chosen as the top rookies. The student-athlete leadership and community development awards went to men’s hockey forward Jordan DePape and women’s soccer goalie Chloe Werle. The 2015-2016 Pat Gill Legacy Award was given to basketball assistant coach Randy Kusano.
