EDMONTON – The Alberta Aviation Museum is celebrating Canada Day with free flights for children eight to 16. The Edmonton chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association will provide the half-hour flights.
Tom Hinderks, the museum executive director, said it’s “a whole new beautiful world for them.”
Registration is limited and on a first-come first-served basis. Canada Day celebrations at the museum start June 28 and carry on through the weekend.
Arriving on Friday is the Vintage Wings of Canada’s Boeing Stearman bi-plane trainer that was used in Alberta during the Second World War.
On Friday at 7 p.m., Canadian astronaut Maj. Jeremy Hansen will give a presentation. The museum is at 11410 Kingsway Avenue. Canada Day events are included in the price of admission. Friday evening’s events are free.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo, 13315 Buena Vista Road, is hosting a wide variety of things to do from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Celebrations at the zoo are not just for Canada Day, but for the zoo’s 53rd birthday as well.
– The Muttart Conservatory, 9626 96A Street, will celebrate Canada Day from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission costs apply but you will be able to enjoy live music, get involved in crafts, along with a host of other family activities.
– West Edmonton Mall will be getting into the act with storytelling, arts and crafts, face painting, and a live performance by singer Paul Larieau at 1 p.m.

– Fort Edmonton Park. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. visitors will be treated to a parade and free cake, while music, games, and historical vignettes will run throughout the day.
– City Hall. From 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a bevy of activities at Sir Winston Churchill Square.
– Mill Woods will play host to family oriented events starting at 1 p.m. in Mill Woods Park. Activities are free and capped off with a fireworks display at 11 p.m.
– Old Strathcona will be the site of the 25th annual Silly Summer Parade and Picnic in the Park from noon to four. The parade will travel down Whyte Avenue ending at the Queen Alexandra School grounds for a picnic.
– At the legislature grounds, there will be culturally oriented performances throughout the day. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. there will be dancers, musicians, even a magician, performing at various times during the day at one of three stages.
– Northlands will host a celebration at the Telus Stage, 7515 118 Avenue. The event runs 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be free hotdogs, pop, cake, and live entertainment, with a variety of activities for the whole family.
– The Edmonton river valley fireworks start at 11 p.m. Telus Field will open its doors at 8 p.m., with food drink and concessions available. Parking and admission is free. Other choice spots to see the fireworks will be the legislature grounds, Victoria Park, Ezio Faraone Park, Dantzer’s Hill, and Government House Park.
– Edmonton Viets Association, Boyle Street Community Services, and St. Catherine Catholic School will host their annual barbecue. It starts at 11 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. on the St. Catherine School grounds, 10915 110 Street.
– The Muslim Association of Canada will be hold a celebration from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Collingwood South Park, 64th Avenue and 172nd Street. There will be a barbecue and many activities for families.
Events around Edmonton:
Fort Saskatchewan will have a large number of activities throughout the day. Opening ceremonies are at 2 p.m. at Legacy Park, with those on hand being served birthday cupcakes and ice cream. There will be live musical performances. A fireworks display is set for 10:45 p.m. Strathcona County has a wide range of activities, starting at 9 a.m. Canada Day at Broadmoor Lake Park in Sherwood Park. Hundreds of activities run throughout the day culminating in a fireworks display at 11 p.m. over Broadmoor Lake in the centre of the park.
Leduc will have an wide range of events throughout the day and all around the city. William F. Lede Park will host concerts featuring local artists starting at 5 p.m. and fireworks at 11 p.m.
– Elk Island National Park will celebrate Canada Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Things start off with a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a flag-raising ceremony at 12 p.m. That will be followed by a barbecue and music festival. There will also be face painting and glitter tattoos available from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
