Toronto police say the 8-year-old boy who was attacked by a pit bull Wednesday night was playing catch with the dog when it suddenly turned on him, biting him in the neck.

The dog started nipping at one of the responding officers, who was beating it away with a baton when the officer’s partner shot it dead.

According to police the pit bull belonged to a neighbour, with the boy and his father looking after it while the neighbour was at work.

Police say the boy was bit on the neck, buttocks and the back of his leg. He was taken to hospital and released a few hours later.

They don’t expect to file charges.
