Residents of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation have identified the suspect in an apparent murder-suicide as 59-year-old Chucky Sasakamoose. His father, Fred Sasakamoose, was the first-ever aboriginal player in the National Hockey League (NHL).
A family member confirmed the identity on Facebook Tuesday. The 59-year-old was confronted by police after a seven-hour search.
Mounties were called to the Cree Nation just before 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday for several reports of shots being fired near the health centre.
A 56-year-old man from the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation was killed. His name has not been released.
A man dressed in camouflage gear was seen to be fleeing the scene on an ATV and investigators warned residents in the area to stay indoors while they searched for their suspect.

At around 5 p.m. investigators located their suspect, a 59-year-old man, on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation. A firearm was discharged at the scene and the man was taken to hospital in Shellbrook where he was pronounced dead. RCMP say none of their officers fired their weapons.

No other suspects are being sought.
The RCMP has requested that the Saskatoon Police Service conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a firearm when the suspect was discovered.
Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation is approximately 135 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
