It was built in 1912 and, for more than a century, has sat on Stony Plain Road overlooking Groat Road and Edmonton’s River Valley. Over the weekend, Sylvancroft Mansion was demolished.
The 8,000-square foot Glenora home has been sitting empty for the better part of a decade and was in need of significant repairs.
After Beljan Development purchased the property, it worked with the city to find a buyer for the old mansion for about four years, but no one made an offer.
The City of Edmonton also brought its case to the province, asking to have the home restored and declared a historic site, but that request was denied.
Then, in July 2015, the developer filed a request to demolish the mansion.

“After four years of trying to find a new chapter for the house, we have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for it and the community at Sylvancroft would like to see a resolution finally,” Beljan Development said in a statement.
“It’s unfortunately a house that is far too big and too costly to repair.”
The home was perched at the end of Sylvancroft Lane. New modern homes are being built there. The new Sylvancroft development is described as Edmonton’s “first modern infill community.”
The development includes 10 lots accessible by a private laneway in the Groat Estates neighbourhood. Buyers can choose their own builder to design their custom home within architectural guidelines.
