Saskatoon‘s police chief has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on residential schools that his force has come a long way since the Neil Stonechild inquiry.
Clive Weighill says the force has implemented diversity training, improved the way complaints against police are handled, and now has 11 per cent aboriginal representation among its ranks.
Stonechild was found frozen on the edge of Saskatoon in 1990 and an inquiry judge later concluded two constables had him in custody the night he was last seen alive.
Weighill says that while the Saskatoon police had nothing to do with residential schools, he wanted to show that the police have reconciled and worked hard on issues.
