CALGARY – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Calgary’s Stanley Park on Sunday.

Police were called to the southwest park at around 3:40 p.m. for reports of a man with a firearm.

When they arrived, officers found a man carrying what appeared to be a handgun, walking between trees near an area where children were playing soccer.

“The initial call from the public was a very astute citizen that was giving us updates [saying] it was a male dressed in black, holding what appeared to be a handgun – and they were giving us regular updates as to where this person was in the park,” Acting Duty Inspector Phil Hoetger said. “The park was very busy. It was a sunny, hot Sunday.”

Police used a HAWC helicopter to clear the area and cordoned off the park as a a precaution.

“We have one male in custody and our officers will investigate the actions of the offender,” Insp. Hoetger said. “ASIRT will investigate the actions of us, of the police officers involved.”

No one was injured.

It’s unknown if the man taken into custody was in fact carrying a gun.

“That’s something that ASIRT will speak to. Through the investigation, ASIRT will clarify,” Insp. Hoetger said.
