‘No one is above the law,’ Quebec City politicians react to Normandeau arrest

QUEBEC CITY – Politicians in Quebec City reacted swiftly to the arrest of former Liberal deputy premier Nathalie Normandeau.

Premier Philippe Couillard told reporters that the arrest shows that “no one is above the law.”

The current Liberal leader made efforts to distance his party from the government that existed when Normandeau was Deputy Premier and Minister of Natural Resources and Wildlife.

Normandeau was an MNA from 1998-2011, serving in former Premier Jean Charest’s Liberal cabinet.

On Thursday, Couillard said his government doesn’t have a problem with political party financing.

“Ever since we lowered the limit to donate to $100, the ambiance is totally different,” he said.

“Fundraising is not an issue.”

Parti Québécois MNA Pascal Bérubé and Coalition Avenir Quebec MNA Nathalie Roy both said they were concerned about the arrest and were following the case closely.

Québec Solidaire wants any illegal money associated with the charges paid back.
