An underground cable fault left thousands of people in southwest Calgary without power Wednesday evening.
It happened just before 5 p.m. on 17 Avenue – right outside the old Alberta Children’s Hospital. South Calgary, Bankview, Richmond and Scarborough were among the affected neighbourhoods.
The explosion blew a manhole cover right off and, initially, almost 4,000 Enmax customers were affected.

Enmax said the power cable will need to be replaced.
By 6 p.m., power had been restored to most homes but traffic in the downtown was severely affected due to a number of traffic lights that were also in the black.
