A Michigan police officer escaped with just minor injuries Saturday after the driver of a car he pulled over opened fire at him.
The Battle Creek Police Department released dashcam video of the frightening incident on Monday, which shows Officer Brad Gentry approaching the car.
The video captures Gentry saying to the motorist, “What’s up, man?” just before a gun appears from the driver’s side window of the suspect’s white Ford Taurus.
The officer’s quick thinking potentially saved his life, as he was able to jump out of the way just as the gun was fired.
The video shows Gentry stumble back, before firing several rounds at the vehicle as it sped away. He was uninjured but suffered temporary hearing loss as a result of the gunfire.
In the full video released by police, Gentry is heard yelling into his radio, “Shots fired, shots fired,” sparking a police chase with speeds up to 110 kph that weaved through residential neighbourhoods.
Two minutes into the chase, the driver is recorded narrowly missing another vehicle at an intersection.
During the chase, someone can be heard over the radio ordering, “If anybody can take that car out, do it.”
“I can barely hear my radio,” Gentry said during the pursuit.
Nearly four minutes after the chase began, the driver flees his vehicle, and Gentry is heard describing the suspect as a, “black male, black coat, blue hoodie.”
The suspect, 21-year-old Darriyone Zamone Clark-Brown, allegedly dropped the gun he used to shoot at Gentry in the snow, before running into his mother’s house.
Clark-Brown was arrested following a short standoff with police.
He was charged with assault with the intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, fleeing and eluding, resisting, obstructing or assaulting an officer, and driving without a license.
He faces life in prison if convicted.
