UPDATE: RCMP have shed some light on why they blocked off some downtown Penticton streets Monday.
A section of Martin Street was blocked by a police cruiser mid-Monday morning leaving some residents wondering what was happening.
RCMP say they were dealing with a distraught man at a Martin Street residence after receiving a call from a federal agency earlier in the day.
“The report of the male possibly requiring medical assistance, came from a Federal Government agency who had been conversing with the man over the phone earlier that morning, when he became agitated and distraught,” says RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk. “Officers attended the apartment block and secured the area, instructing residents in the nearby units and buildings to remain indoors for the time being.”

Moskaluk says officers managed to convince the man to leave his residence and surrender peacefully.
He says a replica pellet gun was found inside the man’s residence.

PENTICTON — Some Penticton residents were wondering what was going on following a heavy police presence downtown.
According to witnesses, police had a section of Martin Street closed.
Corey Hounslow of Valley Ink. Tattoo says police told him to close up shop.
His business is located at the corner of White Avenue and Martin Street.
“I saw two cop cars pull up followed by two more cops in plain-clothes and they told me to close up shop. That I wasn’t going to be open today.”
Hounslow says police were hiding behind police cruisers and telephone poles — focusing their attention on a nearby building.
He says police have since left the area and that Martin Street is open to traffic again.
