Canadian plastics industry, Coderre meet to discuss Montreal bag ban

MONTREAL – The Canadian Plastics Industry Association met with Montreal mayor Denis Coderre to try and convince him to reconsider a city-wide ban on plastic bags.

The city announced last month it would ban single-use bags starting Jan. 1, 2018.

However, the plastics industry insisted the move won’t be a good one for the environment.

It argued people will buy thicker plastic bags for their garbage, because they won’t be able to use regular bags.

The city said the meeting was positive and confirmed the plastics industry will be part of a group who will come up with a plan on how to properly implement the ban.

Montreal’s environment committee made the recommendation to ban plastic shopping bags in December, 2015.
