Previous story:

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward after what they are calling a number of ‘bizarre’ incidents in downtown Vancouver Monday night.

The first incident happened around 10 p.m. near Canada Place and Burrard Street.

Police received reports of a woman attacking pedestrians in the area.

One report mentioned she was trying to pick up and throw a 31-year-old woman over the pier and into the waters below.

The officers attended and found the suspect near Harbour Green Park 10 minutes later.

She was initially taken to hospital, where she allegedly kicked an 88-year-old woman lying on a nearby stretcher in the head. The woman was not seriously injured.

The suspect was eventually transported to a Vancouver jail. When she got to jail, the handcuffs she was wearing were in her pocket. It appears she dislocated her own thumbs to free herself. She also appears to have eaten her hospital bracelet.

Brian Montague with Vancouver Police says the woman was then sedated and taken back to hospital.

She is now in jail, where she remains in custody.

She is facing possible charges of attempted murder and assault.

Investigators believe there were witnesses at the scene, who left before police arrived. They say there could be at least one more victim, who has not spoken with police.

The suspect is 20 years old and new to Vancouver.

“We believe she’s been in Vancouver for two or three days,” says Montague. “She is from back East, where she has an extensive violent police history.”

Montague says her name will not be released until charges are laid.

He says there is no reason to alarm the public right now as the suspect is in custody.

“If she manages to get out of custody though, she would be considered probably Vancouver’s biggest safety concern,” adds Montague.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the VPD Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541.
