For months, Warner Brothers has been teasing their highly anticipated superhero smackdown in a variety of ways. Some of them really connected with fans. Others, not so much.

But the one thing they’ve stayed away from (for the most part) is actually showing a confrontation between Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman (Ben Affleck).

No longer.

A newly-released trailer for the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice gives an extended glimpse of the iconic hero vs. hero showdown.

Anyone wondering how the human-powered Bruce Wayne can keep up with the Kryptonian Clark Kent gets their answer in the opening seconds, as a very angry Superman slams Batman through an apartment building.

“Stay down!” Superman screams at a downed Batman. “If I wanted it, you’d be dead already.”

Batman’s edge seems to come from the large, mechanical suit he’s wearing. While many have drawn the comparison to Marvel’s iron-clad megastar Iron Man, the look is actually inspired by the 1986 comic story The Dark Knight Returns, considered the most iconic story in all of Batman’s comics canon.

And in true Batman fashion, the Dark Knight quickly turns the tables on the Man of Steel with a well-timed smoke grenade – before getting the drop on him with some sort of projectile weapon as the trailer ends.

Also starring Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Batman’s loyal butler/confidant Alfred Pennyworth, and Jesse Eisenberg as Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is the sequel to 2012’s Superman reboot Man of Steel.

Both films are directed by Zach Snyder, who has also been tapped to helm the upcoming Justice League film which will bring together DC Comics biggest stars.

But fans won’t have to wait that long to see some Justice Leaguers on the big screen. Israeli actress Gal Gadot will play Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman, and there are rumours Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash will make appearances as well.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in North America on March 25.
