Footage shows charging hoverboard explode in Chicago area home

A family in a Chicago suburb are lucky nobody was home when a hoverboard plugged into charge exploded into flames.

Security footage shows the self-balancing scooter bursting into flames just before 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 16, setting fire to the area and activating the fire alarms. Emergency crews arrived and put out the fire but not before it caused a significant amount of damage to the home.

The popular self-balancing devices have been linked to multiple fires and explosions since arriving on the scene last year, becoming one of 2015’s most sought-after gadgets. Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was investigating dozens of fires caused by hoverboards across the United States.

In December, Amazon pulled many popular hoverboard models from its website after authorities around the world issued warnings about the safety of the devices. Many airlines, including Air Canada, have barred travelers from bringing them on board planes.
